Local Democratic Leaders need to end collusion with Republicans to elect inferior Candidates

LOCAL DEMOCRATIC LEADERS NEED TO END COLLUSION WITH REPUBLICANS TO ELECT INFERIOR CANDIDATES

By JON SUSCE

In a deceitful and deceptive sham, attempting to hide her own and other local Democratic leaders continued collusion with local Republican operatives, in order to elect inferior candidates, Sarasota County Democratic Party chairperson Joanne DeVries wrote the following to this reporter:

“John, As a voting member and precinct committeeman of the SCDP you should be taking a neutral position in the upcoming city election.  We (as in the SCDP) have made a commitment to stay out of the process as there are multiple Democrats running. We have made it clear that we are neutral. I find your accusations very disingenuous.”

DeVRIES SHOULD BE DIRECTING CRITICISM TOWARD HERSELF

It is “very disingenuous” and outrageous that DeVries is criticizing this reporter for stating, as Publisher of THE SARASOTA PHOENIX, what is obvious to any logical person— namely that the most qualified candidates for the at-large Sarasota City Commissioners positions are Jennifer Ahearn-Koch, Fredd Atkins and Susan Chapman.

By the way, DeVries is just a  mouthpiece for local Democratic leaders, like, Rita Ferandino, Christine Jennings and Susan Nilon, who got politically destroyed in the last local election cycle.

NO MENTION OF ATWELL, ALPERT & JAMES ENDORSEMENT

What is equally outrageous about DeVries assertion of this reporter being disingenuous, with respect to my stated opinions about the most qualified candidates for the Sarasota City Commission—made from her perch in Cambodia where she is on vacation—is that she mentions nothing about other members of the SDEC making endorsements or contributing to other Democrats running for Sarasota City Commission.

For example, I doubt very seriously if there is an email from DeVries criticizing Democratic  Sarasota City Commissioners Suzanne Atwell and Liz Alpert, for not only endorsing Gannon, but contributing to his campaign.  (Atwell has also endorsed Hagen Brody for Sarasota City Commissioner).

In addition, I doubt that Edward James III got an email from DeVries chastising him for not only endorsing Gannon, but receiving $533.33 as a consultant for Gannon’s campaign.

ALL THREE OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED INDIVIDUALS ARE SCPD MEMBERS.
If anyone believes these SCPD members received emails from DeVries calling them “very disingenuous,” you must be on vacation with DeVries in Cambodia.

NOT A WORD ABOUT HYDE ATTACK ON CHAPMAN

What is equally outrageous is that there hasn’t been a word from DeVries and her leadership team about the sole Republican candidate, Martin Hyde, who has for over a year attacked Commissioner Chapman.  In addition, no response from DeVries as to the phone banks promoting Hyde’s continued attacks on Chapman and other Democrat candidates, arranged under the local Republican leadership of Joe Gruters and Jack Brill.

DeVRIES “VERY INGENIOUS” COVER-UP

DeVries’s email to this reporter is a blatant attempt to cover up a deceitful political agenda—an agenda and cover up of local Democratic leaders in collusion with local Republican operatives to destroy Commissioner Chapman, who is the nemesis of local Republican multimillionaire, massive urban sprawl developers like Jesse Biter.

DIMINISH POSITIVE POLITICAL INFLUENCE OF CCNA

In addition, DeVries and other local Democratic leaders mentioned above, have joined together with Republican operatives like Randy Benderson’s flunkies, Joe Barbetta, Paul “Fredo” Caragiulo and 68 times convicted felon Michael Barfield to diminish the political influence of the Coalition of City Neighborhood Associations (CCNA).
It’s both incredible and politically inept that local Democratic leaders like DeVries, Ferrandino, Griffith, Jennings and Nilon join together with Republican operatives like Barbetta, Caragiulo, Gruters, Brill and others in attacking, instead of promoting unity with neighborhood activists throughout the City of Sarasota represented on the CCNA; a neighborhood association that has a long and respected history of promoting the best interests of the City of Sarasota.

PROMOTION OF LESS QUALIFIED “PAY TO PLAY” CANDIDATES

Instead of promoting the best qualified candidates, who learn through participation in the CCNA about important neighborhood issues, and then move on to gain firsthand knowledge about the way in which the City of Sarasota operates by means of volunteer work on the numerous City of Sarasota Advisory Boards; DeVries, Ferrandino, Jennings, and Griffith encourage less qualified candidates to become Sarasota City Commissioners—people who are identical to the Republican “Pay to Play” Sarasota County Commissioners

FAILED STATES ATTORNEY WANTS TO BE CITY COMMISSIONER

A prime example is Hagen Brody, who after a less than distinguished career with the local States Attorney office and possessing no past involvement with any City of Sarasota Advisory Boards, decides that he would like to run for a Sarasota City Commission seat.

If anyone believes Brody was not a total embarrassment to the local States Attorney when he was asked to resign by States Attorney Ed Brodsky, take a look at the facts as stated in the recent Sarasota Herald Tribune investigative article about Brody’s “resignation.” Williams reported that Brody was asked to resign after showing up late for a court appearance, which occurred shortly after Brody prosecuted felons while his license was under suspension. (SEE ATTACHMENT)

Incredibly, Brody has received endorsements from Democrats Atwell and Alpert and Republicans John and Nora Patterson, who should be embarrassed for endorsing this slick and totally unqualified candidate for the Sarasota City Commission.

The most obvious demonstration of DeVries and her leadership team in collusion with Republican operatives, be it intentional or due to naiveté, is the absurdity of their failure to understand how the candidacy of so called “Democrat” Patrick Gannon is being promoted by Barbetta, Caragiulo, Biter, Ziegler and other Republican operatives.

For example, anyone who has even minimal knowledge of the political scene in Sarasota, understands full well that Gannon’s inner circle of close political associates, namely Roger Barry, Peter Fannin and John Moran, are tied to the hip with the Barbetta-Caragiulo-Barfield, “hate Susan Chapman group” and are all registered Republicans.

When DeVries wends her way back from Cambodia, I suggest she take her cronies, Ferrandino, Jennings, Griffith and Nilon, down to Jessie Biter’s Headquarters on Fruitville Road and observe two large signs placed strategically on Biter’s site promoting Republican Martin Hyde, and Democrat in name only (DINO) (and Biter Advocate), Patrick Gannon for the Sarasota City Commission.

It should be a total embarrassment to DeVries and her leadership team to drive by Biter’s Headquarters on Fruitville Road and have to see the large (Democrat) “GANNON FOR SARASOTA CITY COMMISSIONER” and (Republican) MARTIN HYDE FOR SARASOTA CITY COMMISSIONER signs.

Gannon is no doubt is the type of Democrat candidate, who will fit beautifully into the pockets of major financial supporters of Republican local, state and national candidates like Biter.

GANNON/BITER/SCOTT CONNECTION

By the way, Gannon personally placed his GANNON FOR SARASOTA CITY COMMISSIONER sign on Biter’s property for all to see as they drive by on one of the City of Sarasota’s most traveled thoroughfares, located on the property of Republican Governor Rick Scott’s most vocal, enthusiastic and outspoken supporter.

Incidentally, Scott just appointed a Biter fellow traveler, local Republican multimillionaire developer, Carlos Beruff to head up the review of the Florida Constitution.

If DeVries and her DINO cronies desire to make bigger fools of themselves, and escalate what should be an embarrassment;  they should take a look at Gannon’s campaign finance report and they will see a maximum campaign contribution from one of Governor Scott’s strongest and vocal supporters:  Biter.

One wonders if DeVries and her DINOS are so politically naïve that they fail to understand that the Biter Building, which has that Democrat, GANNON FOR CITY COMMISSION sign prominently displayed ,is the location where Christian Ziegler, an employee of Biter, puts together his various  attack pieces on Democrat candidates in Sarasota and beyond.

What is troublesome is that this demonstrates, at worst, clear collusion, and at best the most naïve Democratic political leadership team ever to set foot in Sarasota.  In any case, they continue to collude with Republic operatives like Barbetta, Caragiulo, Biter, Gruters, Brill, Ziegler and Barfield, just as they did two years ago.

DINOS COLLUDE TO DESTROY CHAPMAN

For example, two years ago former Sarasota County Commissioner Barbetta, and present Sarasota County Commissioner “Fredo” Caragiulo, joined together with Barfield to form a coalition of Democrats led by Jennings, Ferrandino, Griffith and Nilon in an attempt to destroy Sarasota City Commissioner Susan Chapman, politically and financially.

If anyone had any doubts about the Republican led Barbetta and Democratic led Ferrandino/Jennings Coalition, it was dismissed when the Republican Barbetta and Democrat Atwell were observed celebrating the defeat of Chapman endorsed candidates on election night.

FERRANDINO, BENTLEY AND BARBETTA COLLUSION

In addition, if anyone had any doubts about the Barbetta/ Caragiulo/Barfield trio conspiring with DINO Ferrandino and her cronies and fellow DINO, Morgan Bentley; they should have been in attendance at a meeting two years ago at a coffee shop on Hillview Avenue observing Barbetta, Caragiulo, Barfield and a few others.

At that meeting ,Barbetta spoke of a meeting he had arranged with Ferrandino through his attorney, Morgan Bentley.  Barbetta stated that the purpose of the meeting with Ferrandino was to get her approval for the Barbetta/Caragiulo Elected Mayor proposal. In addition, Barbetta stated he would seek to convince Ferrandino to make a recommendation to her Democratic Executive Committee to deliberately NOT put up a Democratic opponent against Caragiulo in his campaign to replace Barbetta, who was being term limited as a Sarasota County Commissioner.

FERRANDINO “PAY TO PLAY” SCAM WITH BARBETTA
Interestingly, Caragiulo had no Democrat opponent and a short time later, Ferrandino got Barbetta to propose a $5 million dollar project, which was eventually approved for renovation of a recreation park in Osprey, that would be the site for Ferrandino’s rowing club.

The coalition put together two years ago by Republican and Democratic operatives, funded tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of mailers, using monies solicited from financial sources out of Orlando. They managed to violate both the spirit and letter of the Sarasota City Charter with the unprecedented injection of partisanship, and the violation of campaign finance limitations, that were passed into law overwhelmingly by 88% of city voters just a few years ago.

BARBETTA’S OBSESSIONS
What was accomplished in this past election certainly had nothing to do with electing the most qualified candidates to represent residents of the City of Sarasota as commissioners.  What was actually the objective, was to pave the way to arrange for the fulfillment of Barbetta’s obsession to be the first Elected Mayor of the City of Sarasota, and to create a political set-up through which Commissioner Susan Chapman could be severely damaged both politically and financially.
FERRADINO, JENNINGS & NILON ATTACK FELLOW DEMOCRAT
If it’s hard to believe that Democratic Party leaders would attack one of the very few local Democratic office holders, just look back two years ago when Nilon hosted her former radio talk show on WSRQ.

On that particular day, Jennings, Ferrandino and Nilon attacked Chapman for not succumbing to Barfield’s Sunshine law violations, and for not supporting two Democratic candidates on the non-partisan Sarasota City Commission, among other issues, that held no merit for attacking fellow Democrat, Chapman.
